Plastic Roads
Plastic roads are roads constructed with a mix of plastic and bitumen. The ratio is 1:9 with 10% shredded plastic being mixed into 90% bitumen. Laying 1 km of road requires 1 tonne of plastic.

Chennai
The Chennai Corporation's Bus Route Roads Department on January 23rd started milling and re-laying work on the stretch of Valluvar Kottam High Road and Nelson Manickam Road.
Shredded plastic waste would form at least 8 per cent of the weight of the binder used for re-laying. Initially, the civic body planned to use plastic for re-laying of the top layer of 40 mm in the roads.
The 75 to 50 mm macadam layer beneath the top layer of 40 mm is also likely to have plastic content in areas where damage to road is high.

Ernakulam
The Public Works Department (PWD) will use bitumen mixture containing shredded plastic for laying roads in the State as part of efforts to find a solution to the menace created by non-biodegradable plastic and devise innovative methods for road construction.
Under the new initiative, a 400-metre stretch of the Goshree road near the Kerala High Court in Ernakulam will be the first to be laid with shredded plastic. The project is being taken up with the technical assistance of the National Transportation Planning and Research Centre and the Kerala Highway Research Institute (KHRI).

Collecting Plastic Waste in Chennai
From Feb 22nd onwards, every Wednesdays is plastic collection day in Chennai. Every Wednesday conservancy staff on tricycles, who collect door-to-door garbage, will specifically ask for plastic waste, especially thin carry bags and covers in which commodities such as pulses and condiments are packaged, for use in laying roads.

“We have also made arrangements to collect plastics from students of Chennai Schools and private schools. A few private schools, including Velammal group and Alpha group have already agreed to create awareness among their students and ask them to bring plastics that civic body conservancy staff would collect on Wednesdays. We want 100 tonnes of plastic every week,” said a senior official.

Residents who have large amount of plastics can also send email to plasticwaste@chennaicorporation.gov.in.
